What dancers learn in ballet
Students learn ballet positions, barre exercises, center work and across-the-floor combinations. Classes focus on alignment, posture, strength and flexibility, alongside musicality and rhythm.
These fundamentals also support training in other dance styles. For a dancer taking more than one style, ballet provides time to practice the technique behind the movement.
Finding a starting point for a beginner
A first ballet class should fit the dancer's experience as well as their age. Tell us whether your child is new to dance, has tried another style or has taken ballet before. New dancers and parents are invited to a placement consultation before registering.
You don't need to choose a level from an age label alone. Our published levels are a guide, and we'll help you confirm which class to ask about. If you're returning to Encore, use your teacher's placement recommendation or contact us if you haven't received one.
Ballet technique and rehearsal classes
The schedule includes separate ballet technique and rehearsal classes for some advanced groups. Technique focuses on developing ballet skills; rehearsal is time to work on choreography for performance.
When you're comparing these classes, ask which sessions belong together and what enrollment or audition requirements apply. If you're interested in pointe, speak with the team about placement and readiness before registering.
What to wear to ballet
Ballet attire depends on the class level. Ballet shoes are required throughout class, and higher levels have specific requirements for leotards, tights, shoes and hair. The dress-code page also explains boys’ ballet attire and how to order required items through the studio store.
